Open to currently enrolled full-time college freshmen, sophomores and juniors as well as high school seniors in the United States.  Only one entry is permitted per student.

Write a 500 word essay about the following prompt:

Describe how the use of parking lot stencils could improve safety and usability in a parking lot.  Elaborate on the importance of parking lot markings for disabled or handicapped persons.  For Example, how has the ADA helped parking lots become more accessible over the years?

Letters of Recommendation

You will need a minimum of three Letters of Recommendation, but four or five letters would be great.  Start now by making verbal requests.  The ideal reference comes from a professor, counselor, employer or, if you are a recent high school graduate, a high school counselor, teacher or principal. Next to your personal essay, your Letter of Recommendation is a very important part of your scholarship application.

Answering Machine Messages

Yesterday I mentioned the importance of having an email name that sounds professional. My suggestion is the same for voice mail. Keep your message brief and businesslike. In addition, you might consider eliminating music. I find that even soft and soothing music can be annoying when you are trying to reach someone.

In addition, please discourage young children from answering the phone when you are waiting for a possible call from a scholarship committee member. If it is difficult to reach you, they may just move on to the next qualified candidate.

Email Account & Scholarships

It is important to have an email account which is designated specifically for scholarships. Once you start completing your profile on websites such as FastWeb.com, you will be inundated with mail from colleges and institutions. The colleges will try to recruit you and financial institutions will try to convince you to take out a student loan.

Your scholarship email should be professional and simple enough to avoid errors when a scholarship organization is trying to reach you. If it is too long and complicated, there is a greater chance for errors.

Please avoid "cutsey" email addresses like cutelittlechick or bighunk. Also, anything that may be negative like sober5. Probably not a good idea to have a year (Betty1991) since it usually indicates the year you were born. You just don't want to devulge too much personal information through your email name.

There are new email sites frequently. The following are a few you might want to consider:
http://http://www.k7.net/
http://mail.google.com/
http://mail.yahoo.com/
http://www.hotmail.com/

Letters of Recommendation

Have you contacted at least three people who will write a letter on your behalf? Having four or five letters would be ideal, but three is the minimum. Remember that letters from family and friends will not meet the requirement for most applications. Recommendations from two professors and a counselor would be great, but you can also ask a supervisor or an employer.
